Peak partnership between Swissmint and CIT

The Matterhorn, one of the Alps' highest and most iconic peaks, is honored in a stunning new coin created by Swissmint and a fellow MDA member. Marking the historic 1865 ascent led by Edward Whymper, the coin features ultra-high relief of up to 3.5 mm, vividly capturing the mountain’s dramatic form. Limited to just 1865 pieces, with premium 2 kg silver and 1 kg gold editions showcasing smartminting® technology, this collaboration is a striking tribute to both mountaineering history and modern minting innovation.

The Matterhorn, with its almost perfectly symmetrical pyramid peak, is one of the most famous mountains in the world. It is a challenge even for the most experienced mountaineers, and more than 500 climbers have lost their lives on this mountain. With a height of 4478 meters (14,692 feet), it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and Europe. It was not conquered until 1865, when a group led by Edward Whymper reached the summit.

This stunning coin created in cooperation with Swissmint honors that historic climb, with a mintage limited to 1865 pieces. Featuring Switzerland as the issuing country, it showcases ultra-high relief of up to 3.5 mm, capturing the Matterhorn in breathtaking detail. The detailed embossing brings the Matterhorn to life – you can almost hear the wind howling around its massive mountain structure. Furthermore there are two premium editions in 2kg silver and 1 kg gold to highlight the benefits of the smartminting® technology.

It is great to see two MDA members working together to produce such an inspiring outcome.
